Overview

Most trips to Peru pass through Lima, and many travelers see little more than the airport and a hotel. A guided day in the city changes that. Lima was the capital of Spain’s South American empire for almost three centuries, and its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is full of colonial churches, carved wooden balconies and grand plazas. Along the coast, the modern districts of Miraflores and Barranco sit on cliffs above the Pacific, with parks, cafes and a lively arts scene.

This experience combines both sides of the city with its food, which for many visitors is the real highlight of Lima. Peruvian cooking brings together Andean, Spanish, African, Chinese and Japanese influences, and Lima is where those traditions meet. Depending on the program, the food part of the day can be a market visit with tropical fruits you’ve probably never seen, a ceviche lunch, or a few stops for Peruvian classics and a pisco sour. We confirm the exact stops and tastings with your program.

A typical day starts in the historic center, with the Plaza Mayor, the cathedral and one of the colonial churches or monasteries, and continues to Miraflores and Barranco by the sea. The day can also include Huaca Pucllana, a large adobe pyramid built long before the Incas, now surrounded by the city. Timing is flexible, since Lima traffic is heavy and flights come and go at all hours.

DSL Adventures is based in Cusco, and we plan this day as part of your wider trip through Peru, arranging a local guide in Lima and confirming every detail with you. It works well on arrival day, before your flight to Cusco, or at the end of the trip. If you have extra time on the coast, it pairs naturally with our Paracas and Huacachina tour. Our destinations page shows how the coast fits with Cusco and the Andes.

Food, Lodging & Transport

Food & meals

Food is a big part of this day. Depending on your program, you might visit a local market to try fruits such as cherimoya, lucuma and granadilla, stop for ceviche, Peru’s signature dish of fresh fish cured in lime juice, or sample classics like causa, anticuchos and a pisco sour. The exact stops and tastings are confirmed with your program. Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs, and we’ll plan around them: many Peruvian dishes are easy to adapt.

Transportation

You travel between the historic center and the seaside districts by car or van with your guide. Lima traffic is heavy, and the drive between downtown and Miraflores can take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the time of day, so we plan the order of the stops to avoid the worst of it and to fit around your flights.

Difficulty & Altitude

Difficulty
Easy

Fitness

This is an easy day with short walks in the historic center and along the clifftop parks. Some churches and sites have stairs, and a few visits, such as underground crypts, include narrow passages. If you have limited mobility, tell us and we’ll adjust the program.

Permits, Tickets & Rules

  • Entrance fees. Churches, monasteries, museums and archaeological sites such as Huaca Pucllana charge their own entrance fees. We confirm which are included in your quote.
  • Opening hours. Some sites close on certain days or during religious services, so the final program depends on your date.

Traveling with Family

Lima is an easy city to explore with children. The historic center has plenty to look at, the clifftop parks in Miraflores have space to run around, and most kids enjoy trying new fruits and snacks. We can shorten the program and plan more food stops and fewer museums for younger travelers.
