Overview

Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, is a ridge in the Vilcanota range southeast of Cusco whose slopes are striped in red, ochre, yellow and green. The colors come from layers of mineral-rich sediment that were folded and exposed by erosion, and on a clear morning, with the glaciers of Ausangate behind, the view from the top is one of the most striking in the Andes.

It’s also one of the highest day hikes most travelers will ever do. The viewpoint sits at about 5,000 m (16,400 ft), higher than any summit in the lower 48 states of the US. The walk itself is short, usually three to four hours round trip, but every step happens in thin air, and the last stretch to the viewpoint is steep. We’re honest about this because it’s the part people underestimate.

The day starts very early. Most departures leave Cusco around 3 or 4 a.m. for a drive of about three hours, the last part on a dirt road, so that you can walk in the cooler, calmer morning and reach the top before the clouds that often build around midday. Many programs include a simple breakfast before the hike and lunch on the way back, and you’re back in Cusco in the afternoon.

The most important thing you can do is arrive acclimatized. We recommend at least two or three nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before this hike, and we’ll help you place it later in your trip. If you’d like a quieter high-altitude day with more walking and less of a crowd, look at our 7 Lakes of Ausangate hike, in the same mountain range. If you’re still choosing, we compare all our day tours from Cusco by altitude and walking time.

Itinerary

  1. Very early

    Cusco to the trailhead

A pre-dawn pickup in Cusco and a drive of about three hours into the Vilcanota range.

Your guide and driver pick you up at your hotel very early, usually around 3 or 4 a.m. Bring your warm layers into the vehicle: you’ll want them later. The road heads southeast from Cusco through the Vilcanota valley, then climbs a dirt road into high grassland. Many programs stop for a simple breakfast before the hike.

  2. Morning

    The hike to Vinicunca

A steady climb through high grassland to the striped ridge and the viewpoint at about 5,000 m.1.5–2 hours upMax altitude 5,000 m / 16,404 ft

From the trailhead, a wide dirt path climbs gradually through open grassland, past stone corrals and grazing alpacas, with the snowy peaks of the Ausangate range ahead. Your guide sets a slow, even pace and stops often. The final section to the viewpoint is the steepest part of the day, zigzagging up to the ridge.

At the top, the striped slopes of Vinicunca spread out below you, with the glaciers of Ausangate on the skyline on a clear day. Stay as long as the weather and your energy allow, then take in the colors from a different angle on the way down.

If you feel severe headache, dizziness or nausea, tell your guide and head down. Going lower is the best treatment for altitude sickness.

  3. Late morning

    Optional Red Valley and descent

An optional detour to the Red Valley viewpoint, then the walk back to the trailhead.1–1.5 hours down

If the group has the time and energy, you can add a short detour to the Red Valley, a deep valley of rust-red earth next to Vinicunca, reached by a path from the ridge. It has a separate community fee and adds roughly an hour. The descent back to the trailhead is easier on the lungs but hard on the knees, so poles help.

    Ends

  4. Afternoon

    Lunch and return to Cusco

The drive back down, a lunch stop on the way and arrival in Cusco in the afternoon.

You drive back down the dirt road and stop for lunch on the way, when it’s part of your program. Most groups arrive back at their hotel in Cusco in mid to late afternoon, ready for an early night.

Food, Lodging & Transport

Food & meals

Most Rainbow Mountain programs include a simple breakfast before the hike and a lunch on the way back to Cusco, often in one of the villages along the road. Whether both are included is confirmed with your quote. Eat lightly, drink plenty of water and bring snacks for the walk: a small, steady intake of food helps at high altitude.

Transportation

The drive from Cusco takes about three hours each way. Most of it is on paved highway southeast through the Vilcanota valley, and the last hour climbs a winding dirt road to the trailhead. Depending on the trail used for your date, the road runs through the Cusipata or Pitumarca side of the mountain. Expect some rough stretches, and let us know if you get carsick.

Difficulty & Altitude

Difficulty
Challenging
Highest point
5,000 m / 16,404 ftVinicunca viewpoint, about 5,000 m (published figures range from roughly 5,030 to 5,200 m)

Fitness

We rate Rainbow Mountain as challenging. The distance is short and the path is clear, but the whole walk takes place above 4,500 m (14,800 ft), where there’s roughly half the oxygen of sea level, and the final section to the viewpoint is steep. Even very fit people walk slowly here.

You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for an hour or more with breaks, and you should feel well at Cusco’s altitude before you go. Local families usually offer horses for much of the climb, although the last steep stretch is on foot. If you have heart or lung conditions, are pregnant or have had altitude sickness before, talk to your doctor before booking.

Altitude

The trail starts at around 4,600 m (15,100 ft) and climbs to the viewpoint at about 5,000 m (16,400 ft). Published figures for the top vary, from roughly 5,030 m to 5,200 m, so we use the rounder number. For comparison, Cusco sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft).

  • Acclimatize first. Spend at least two or three nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the hike. It’s one of the last day trips we suggest in a Cusco itinerary, not one of the first.
  • Go slowly. Short steps, frequent pauses and steady breathing work better than pushing hard and stopping.
  • Know the signs. A mild headache and shortness of breath are common. Severe headache, dizziness, confusion or nausea mean it’s time to turn around, and your guide will tell you if you need to.

Permits, Tickets & Rules

  • Community entrance fees. Vinicunca is managed by local Andean communities, who collect an entrance fee at the trailhead. The nearby Red Valley has its own fee. Amounts change, so we confirm them before your trip and tell you whether they’re included in your quote.
  • Restrooms. Basic toilets at the trailhead and along the route charge a small fee in soles.
  • Respect the trail. Stay on the marked path. The grassland here is fragile and it’s grazing land for the communities’ alpacas and llamas.

Traveling with Family

Families do visit Rainbow Mountain, but it needs careful thought. Children can be affected by altitude like adults and are often less able to tell you how they feel, the day starts in the middle of the night, and the viewpoint is higher than most people ever go.

If your children are active, well acclimatized and used to hiking, it can be a great experience. For younger children, a lower hike or a gentler day in the Sacred Valley is often a better choice. Talk with our local team about whether this route fits your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the Rainbow Mountain hike?

It’s short but challenging because of the altitude. The walk takes three to four hours round trip, entirely above 4,500 m, with a steep final climb. Most healthy, acclimatized travelers can do it at a slow pace.

How high is Rainbow Mountain?

The viewpoint is at about 5,000 m (16,400 ft). You’ll see figures from roughly 5,030 m to 5,200 m depending on the source.

When should I do it during my trip?

Later rather than earlier. Spend at least two or three nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first, ideally after an easier day hike.

Can I rent a horse?

Local families usually offer horses for much of the climb for an extra fee, paid in cash. The final steep section to the viewpoint is on foot.

What if it’s cloudy or snowing?

Weather at this altitude changes fast. Clouds and snow can hide the colors, especially from December to March. Early starts give you the best chance of clear views, and your guide will make safety calls on the day.

Is Rainbow Mountain suitable for children?

It depends on the child, their hiking experience and how well they’ve acclimatized. We don’t recommend it lightly for young children. Talk with our team about your family first.

Is there a less crowded alternative?

Yes. The 7 Lakes of Ausangate hike is in the same range, quieter and a little lower, with more walking. Some travelers also choose Palccoyo, another striped mountain area with a gentler walk.

Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake?

Rainbow Mountain is higher and more about the colors and the view. Humantay Lake is lower, closer to glaciers and a good warm-up for the Salkantay or Inca Trail treks. Many travelers do both on different days.
